On May 5-8, 2011 the 30th anniversary of the Ian Donald School was held in Dubrovnik,Croatia, returning to its birthplace where the school was founded. Since the founding of the school, there are now 58 branches(with more on the way) and 47 school directors came together for this truly unique event. The transnational, transpolitical nature of our school was highlighted by Mohammed Hashim Wahaaj who invited all to his school in Kabul and assured the safety of all and a successful meeting. It was beautiful to see physicians from all corners of the earth, of all political and religious persuasions united in the common goal of helping maternal, fetal, and neonatal patients throughout the world. The transgenerational nature of our society was illustrated by the presence of the august presence of Kazuo Maeda and Erich Saling contrasted with Tuangsit Wataganara, our youngest director from Thailand who is over half a century younger. A special guest was Tessa Donald, daughter of Ian Donald who emotionally addressed our group describing her father and his family life.
The scientific program featured all aspects of obstetric and gynecologic ultrasound with 58 lectures and was supplemented by 15 lectures in neonatal medicine, a new component of the Donald school.
Medals designed by Croatian artist, Professor Branko Vujanovic, were symbolically awarded to all school directors by Tessa Donald. Subsequently, the two co-directors received medals designed by well known Croatian artist Stipe Sikirica.
Our school has recently agreed to work closely with Dubrovnik International University to advance our educational objectives.A special event to this end was the awarding of the Master Diploma to 15 Graduates from Dubai of the Master Program which consisted of one year of study. This ceremony was held in the Dominican church of Dubrovnik International University. The President and Rector warmly congratulated the graduates in addition to the co-directors and Tessa Donald.
In summary, this 30th anniversary was a tribute to the goals of our Donald School. We have no doubt that Ian Donald is smiling down from heaven on the society that bears his name. Hs daughter Tessa strongly agrees.
